Therapy Is Fun

Foundations First - Northern Ireland
Specialist child friendly therapy space
All therapy intervention with children is provided through play related activities, where the focus is on fun and engagement.

Here are some of the therapy activities that take place:
Picture
Playing with a noisy inset tray puzzle promotes attention, receptive and expressive language skills, visual discrimination, and fine motor skills.
Picture
Walking barefoot over the river stones, demonstrating tactile sensory processing, eye foot co-ordination and balance, whilst memorising verbal instructions.

Picture
Demonstrating; purpose, persistence, hand-eye coordination, and bilateral integration for threading the button. The hidden buttons in the box of gel beads further challenges tactile sensory processing and auditory processing for colour request selection. This highlights inner drive, motivation and integrated sensory systems.
Picture
Suspended platform swing equipment promotes vestibular sensory input, body awareness, and hand eye coordination. The fishing game combines sensory, motor and auditory processing including auditory memory to find the requested hidden object in the fish.

A young child using his visual perceptual, visual motor and fine motor skills as well as balance, to replace a floor jigsaw piece.
Picture
Suspended sling swing equipment challenges vestibular sensory processing, postural control with the added challenge of auditory processing of instructions whilst moving. These demands are combined with a cognitive fun learning task of colour sorting.
Working on the foundation skills for lifelong learning
Picture
Pre-school aged child in the main therapy room motor planning a sequence of actions: auditory request, negotiating stepping stones to complete jigsaw puzzle.
Picture
Ascending and descending the soft play causeway stones, which reinforces purpose and persistence, sequenced actions, heavy work to the muscles and joints. There is the added challenge of auditory or visual memory for the requested object.
Play and movement are essential skills for behaviour and learning
Picture
Using a scooter board and ramp shows motor planning, vestibular sensory processing for movement and proprioception for propelling. This activity also challenges auditory processing as the child needs to remember a verbal instruction to complete the task.
Picture
Social engagement directed towards an adult and a sense of achievement on completion of a therapy task.
Physical movement and sensory processing is the foundation for learning
